Atal tunnel (also known as Rohtang tunnel) is a highway built under the Rohtang tunnel in the eastern Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh. Atal tunnel is the world's longest tunnel at 9.02 km long, above 10,000 feet (3048 miles). This tunnel is named after the prime minister of India i.e., ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE.

Inaugration

Yesterday on 3rd october 2020 PM Narendra Damodar Das Modi inaugrated Atal tunnel. It took around whole 10 years to complete the project. As the work started on 23rd of june 2010.

Dimensions

       length : 9.02 kilometres

       width : 10 metres (33 feet)

       lanes : 2 lanes 

       speed limit : 40-80 kmph.

Pros of Atal tunnel

It reduced the distance between Manali to Leh by 46 km (28.6 miles) and travel time by 4 to 5 hours.

Cost of the total project

The whole project costs approximately about 3200 crore rupees.
